How are ultrasounds used?

An ultrasound has many different uses. When it comes to women's health, however, its primary use is during pregnancy. Dr. Khalil performs ultrasounds during pregnancy to identify any potential issues that may be present, as well as to monitor the growth and development of the baby.

During an ultrasound, he places gel on your abdomen and passes a wand over the surface of the skin, sending radio waves into your body. The waves then bounce back toward the receiver when they encounter any type of obstruction. Using an ultrasound gives Dr. Khalil a detailed view of the baby and can even monitor its movements.

What are the most popular types of birth control?

Though the birth control pill is still widely used, many women are choosing methods like the Depo-Provera® shot, IUDs, and the subdermal implant. These types of birth control can last for several months (the Depo shot) or for several years (subdermal implant).

The ability of these birth control methods to last for long periods of time offers women a level of convenience and security they may not get with the pill. Once they are in place, there is no need to worry about a missed dose. Dr. Khalil will answer any questions you have concerning your preferred method of birth control. He will address your concerns and help you determine which method is right for you.

When should you consider taking a pregnancy test?

Once you've decided to stop taking birth control or are concerned that you may be pregnant, it's essential that you take a pregnancy test as soon as you think you might be pregnant. One of the first signs of pregnancy is a missed menstrual period. Other signs include:

  • breast tenderness
  • morning sickness
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • swelling of the hands or feet
  • increased urination

As soon as you begin to experience one or more of these signs, make an appointment with Dr. Khalil for a pregnancy test. This allows you to begin to receive the additional care you need to keep you healthy during your pregnancy.
