Phlebotomy Q & A

Phoenix Family Medical Care

What is phlebotomy?

Phlebotomy is the practice of puncturing or incising a vein in order to draw blood for testing purposes. A phlebotomist is often called in when a blood draw is requested. Many different diagnostic tests include the use of a blood draw. The blood that is collected during your exam can be used for a wide variety of tests, ranging from a CBC test to a test that measures the number of hormones in the bloodstream.

Dr. Khalil and the staff of Phoenix Family Medical Care have an in-house lab that allows them to perform all of their tests at the office, without having to send away the blood samples and wait for the results. The staff can immediately test your collected blood and not have to take measures to store it. The results can be provided to you as soon as the lab gives them to Dr. Khalil.

What are the benefits of having an in-house lab?

Phoenix Family Medical Care has its own in-house lab that allows them to test all of their blood samples on the premises. This has many benefits for both you and Dr. Khalil. Once you have your blood drawn, the specimen is sent directly to the on-site lab where it is immediately tested.

Because the test is sent down the hall instead of across town, you don't have to wait for the results to be returned. This quick turnaround time is essential if Dr. Khalil is testing for a specific illness like mononucleosis where the patient may need to be extremely aware of whom they come in contact.

What is a CBC test?

A CBC test is a blood test that provides a complete blood count. This includes a count of the platelets and the white blood cells that are contained in the blood. A CBC test is often used to show if your white blood count is abnormally high. This can indicate the presence of a serious infection or illness.

Complete blood counts are also used prior to a surgical procedure to ensure that your blood is capable of providing your body with the nutrients it needs after the surgery is over. If the CBC test shows the presence of an infection, Dr. Khalil may postpone the procedure until you are healthy enough to heal properly.
