Neuropathy Q & A

Phoenix Family Medical Care

What is neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that affects the nerves that travel away from the spinal column and throughout the body. They are also referred to as the peripheral nerves because they run outside the trunk of the body and extend outward to the fingers and toes.

Neuropathy occurs when these nerves are damaged. The damage can be caused by a lack of sufficient blood flow to the area or an injury that disturbs or injuries the nerve fibers. The result can be extremely uncomfortable, starting with numbness and tingling and then escalating to a debilitating form of nerve pain. Nerve pain is much harder to treat than other types of pain because the pain originates in the nerve itself.

Can diabetic neuropathy be prevented?

One of the most common forms of neuropathy is associated with diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy affects the nerves in the extremities, causing numbness and tingling in its earliest stages. Its primary cause has to do with the body's inability to regulate glucose levels in the blood. Constant exposure to large quantities of glucose can damage the delicate nerve fibers.

Although diabetic neuropathy may not be preventable, you can dramatically slow its progression by carefully monitoring your blood glucose levels. Proper diet, regular exercise, and taking your insulin as prescribed can keep your blood glucose levels under control and manageable.

How is neuropathy diagnosed?

Dr. Khalil uses several different tests and screenings to accurately diagnose neuropathy. They include:

  • electromyography
  • filament tests
  • autonomic testing
  • nerve conduction studies
  • quantitative sensory tests

These tests are extremely effective when trying to diagnose diabetic neuropathy.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, Dr. Khalil will keep a close watch on your condition so that he can help you manage it effectively. He will also monitor any changes you may notice in terms of numbness, tingling, and varying degrees of pain in your extremities. He can help you find ways to improve your circulation through exercise and other types of activities. Everyone's treatment plan will be different and personalized to their needs.
