Family Medicine Q & A

Why are annual exams so important for adults?

An annual exam is essential for adults for several reasons. Annual exams are designed to monitor your health from year-to-year so that your physician can identify even small changes. Your file includes notes from your prior checkups plus a copy of your family medical history.

The tests and screenings that are performed during an annual exam can detect dangerous health conditions in their earliest stages. This includes:

  • heart disease
  • diabetes
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • cancer

Being able to diagnose these conditions, and others, in their earliest stages allows Dr. Khalil an opportunity to provide you with more effective treatment options.

What does the doctor look for during an annual exam?

During an annual exam, Dr. Khalil will review with you any pertinent notes from previous exams. Once he has completed your physical exam and performed various screenings, he can compare your current health with that of previous years. A few of the most common screenings include:

  • cholesterol screening
  • blood sugar levels
  • blood pressure reading
  • prostate screenings (men)
  • mammograms and pap smears (women)

Dr. Khalil will be looking for any changes in your health that could be indicative of a serious health condition. This includes spikes in your blood pressure, elevated PSA levels (men), or higher than normal blood glucose levels.

What type of information does a detailed family medical history offer?

A detailed family history includes information from your parents, grandparents, siblings, and close aunts and uncles. When a health condition appears in close relatives such as parents and siblings, you are more likely to be diagnosed with that condition as well.

When you fill out a detailed family medical history, it shows Dr. Khalil what types of health conditions he should be looking for during your annual exams. It will also allow him to offer you preventive treatment options to keep those conditions from causing you concern in the future. Although he may not be able to prevent you from being diagnosed with the condition, he can prolong the amount of time before the symptoms begin to cause discomfort.
