Allergies Q & A

Phoenix Family Medical Care

Are there different kinds of allergies?

There are several different kinds of allergies. Food allergies are caused by the body's inability to properly utilize certain foods. Common food allergens include:

  • peanuts
  • gluten
  • strawberries
  • lactose intolerance

Upper respiratory allergies affect the nasal passages, sinuses, throat, and lungs. Hay fever and asthma often result from exposure to airborne allergens. Symptoms of most allergic reactions involve:

  • coughing
  • sneezing
  • runny nose/watery eyes
  • sore throat
  • chest congestion
  • hives/rash

How are allergies diagnosed?

In most cases, a doctor can diagnose your allergies through a scratch or patch test. This involves scratching the surface of the skin and placing a small amount of allergen over the area. If the scratch becomes red, inflamed, and begins to itch, you are most likely allergic to that particular substance.

Although many food allergies can be diagnosed in the same way, you can also try an elimination diet. This involves eliminating all foods except for those that are known to be safe. Reintroduce each food back into your diet for a few days. If you have any type of consistent reaction to the food, you’re considered to be allergic. Dr. Khalil can discuss the testing methods with you to determine what is best for you.

Is immunotherapy effective at reducing the symptoms of allergies?

Immunotherapy involves the use of regular injections that deliver small amounts of your allergen into your bloodstream. This gives your body an opportunity to make the antibodies it needs to reduce the allergic reaction you experience each time you are exposed to the substance.

The serum is made from minute amounts of the allergen and is injected once a week. After you reach a maintenance dose, you’ll only receive the shots every two weeks. This process continues for several months. For people with severe allergies, immunotherapy may last several years.
